2. Network with other caregivers 

Several support groups exist in different cities. The ideal thing would be to reach out to a support group that can help you to deal with your feelings of worry, anxiety, grief and can make you more in control of yourself. This will help you to address your new responsibilities in a better way. If you don’t have a support group in your area, there are a lot of support groups online that you can be part of to share your feelings.

These are people who will know exactly what you’re going through, will understand emotions that come in play while taking care of a person with disability, and will make you feel less alone.

3. Taking Care Of A Person With A Disability Doesn’t Mean You Forget Your Life!

It often happens that when we take care of an ailing or disabled family member, it’s quite easy to get consumed and forget your own life and ignore your needs in the new role.  That’s why it is very important to strive for balance in your life. This means scheduling time for yourself despite the demands of your new role. Pursue your hobby, take care of your friends, go out, whatever it takes do it to refresh yourself. Doing what you love will help you to embrace your role as a caregiver.

Process of Acquiring A Driving License For The Disabled In India – Part 2

In the first part of this blog, Process Of Acquiring A Driving License For The Disabled In India- Part 1 we talked about registering your vehicle as an Invalid Carriage.

Now that that’s been done, you will first need to procure a learner’s licence.

How does one get this?

A driving school such as Ability On Wheels, Ahmedabad,  can help you with the process. Should you wish to do it independently, here’s how.

Learner’s License

You must go the the RTO website of your area.
In the Home menu, go to Apply Online,New Learners license.

Once you are on this page, furnish all the details required and follow the process mentioned. Approach the RTO Office again with all the printed forms. Don’t forget to carry the original RC book and it’s copy, Disability ID Card, Certificate and Driving Ability Certificate.

It’s imperative to take your vehicle for the LLR. The fee to get your Learner’s licence must be paid at the  fee counter. Once this is done, see the inspector who will approve your forms.  After the approval of your forms and the clicking of your photograph, you can (usually)  download the LLR the same day from same website where you applied.

Now wait for a month. This is a routine waiting period for all forms of licenses.

Driver’s License

After the mentioned waiting period is over, you should go back to your state’s local RTO website and apply for a New License. If you have any additional endorsements such as a scooter licence, please make sure to attach those. Once this is done, repeat the process of filling up all the forms, upload all required scanned documents, and take print out of the forms. Take all your documents and  visit the fee counter, pay the fee, meet the inspector, provide your driving test, get his approval, get the forms signed at the office and finally, take your photo. Now sit back and wait!

Your driving licence should arrive at your home soon.

Disabled Driving All you need to know

Disabled driving is no more a far-fetched concept and is as real as it could be. Over the years, with the heightened awareness about the interests and needs of the disabled population and with the establishment of concerned laws and institutions, the process has become hassle-free and convenient.
With certain handicap driving modifications in the vehicle and a license for disabled driving, one can drive with safety and ease.

Handicap driving modifications:

While the process for acquiring a permit as a disabled person is simple and crisp, one must make certain modifications in his/her vehicle in order to qualify for a driver’s license. These modifications will largely depend upon the nature and intensity of one’s disability. Some general changes are as follows:

  • Power Controls – The vehicle should be modified to include certain power controls such as an electric gear selector, power steering, joysteer, electric breaks etc. These power controls will act as an aid for people who possess lowered reliance on a firm grip (On both hands and feet).
  • Ramps – Ramps are essential for wheelchair-bound drivers to get them into the vehicle.
  • Customized seats – The driver’s seat should be modified with a stability management system in order to eliminate the possibility of displacement of the handicapped person.
  • Sound detecting equipment is an additional adaptive device with help detect the sound waves from the surroundings to facilitate the driver if he/she is hearing impaired.
  • Additional grips have to be incorporated in case of a driver with a loosened grip to facilitate firm handling of controls.

License for disabled driving

  • Everyone wishing to drive a vehicle has to incorporate certain modifications in the vehicle and acquire a license for disabled driving by appearing for both written and road test.
  • Before appearing for the tests, the disabled person is liable to fill out an application form which can be acquired from the concerned transportation authority of your locality, and upload the scanned copies of the form. At the appointed time of the test, copies of documents such as RC Book, disabled ID certificate etc.
  • A Similar registration procedure is required for Driver’s license after the procurement of Learner’s license.

Process Of Acquiring A Driving License For The Disabled In India- Part 1

More and more people in India are seeking out to procure a driving license thanks to Disability Driving Schools such as Ability On Wheels in Ahmedabad.

  • At the time of purchasing a new car please do not forget to claim 50% concession in insurance (only valid for people with disabilities buying the vehicle in their own name). Next step is to get the vehicle modified from genuine vendors.
  • Next visit the RTO with all the required documents (you may visit the RTO website of your local area) such as address proof, ID proof, car insurances, etc. You will also require to carry a Form 20 with class of vehicle as INVALID CARRIAGE Non Transport duly filled,  Disability ID card and Disability Certificate, two copies of the Chassis number on two papers (done by pencil sketching), covering letter requesting the RTO to register your car as Invalid Carriage and for Tax exemption.
  • At the RTO, have the assigned inspector check your car and give his approval. Proceed towards submitting the form. The registration charges are minimal since you will get 100% Road Tax exemption (varies from state to state).
  • Once the forms have been submitted and accepted at the office, they will ask you to come after a week to collect the RC book / card. A nominal fee of around 120 rupees to “alter your vehicle” to Invalid Carriage might be incurred here.

Ensure the class of Vehicle is Invalid Carriage and other details like colour, engine, fuel etc are correct. Congrats! You are a step closer to acquiring your drivers license.

Can People With Disabilities Drive A Vehicle In India?

Whether a person with a physical disability can get a driving license in India or not depends on an individual’s physical capability and the extra equipment to accommodate them. Driving school for the disabled in India now are coming up with the intent to make disabled people independent.

People suffering from loco-motor disabilities (meaning disability of the bones, joints muscles leading to substantial restriction of the movement of the limbs or any form of cerebral palsy) are eligible to drive an Invalid Carriage (modified vehicle) if the licensing authority is satisfied that he is fit to drive such a carriage.

As per Indian Motor Vehicle Act “invalid carriage” means a motor vehicle specially designed and constructed, and not merely adapted, for the use of a person suffering from some physical defect or disability, and used solely by or for such a person.

People suffering from hearing impairment, visual impairment & mental illness are not authorized to drive.

In all cases, a driving school for disabled must make the driver skilled to be tested to prove you can drive safely, and a restriction will be placed on your driver’s license.

All States require a valid learner’s permit or driver’s license to receive an on-the-road driving evaluation. You cannot be denied the opportunity to apply for a permitor license because of age or disability. However, a driver’s license with restrictions may be issued based on your need of adaptive equipment.

However in 2011, the Delhi High Court has allowed deaf persons to go through the test and drive if they are found capable, the High Court has, for the first time in this country, permitted deaf persons to legally drive a vehicle.
